ABOUT US

Vasudaivakakudumbakam (the universal family of God) is the ideal that inspired Dr. Thomas Kulangara to found a charitable society named “Society for Unity and Integral Progress” (registered under the 12 th Travancore Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Organizations, Registration act of 1955, with the registration number 632/1995).

The main objectives of the society are the following:

1. To offer educational, cultural, social and spiritual training for the children and youths hailing from the poorest strata of the society, of all castes and religions, in order to facilitate their integral progress.
2. In particular, the society seeks to develop in the minds of its beneficiaries a sense of universal brotherhood and a legitimate pride of their national heritage.
3. The society endeavours to cultivate a sense of social sensibility especially for the poor and to foster harmony and tolerance among all sections of the society.
4. Besides, the society encourages its beneficiaries to develop in them a habit of hard work both in studies and in human service and to attain self-reliance in economic matters.
5. Skill development especially the development of vocational skills is another cherished goal of the society.

Ever since its foundation in 1995 the society has been striving after the realization of its goals through various training programs offered for its beneficiaries. Such programs include residential training programs for children and youths, evening schools for children who have difficulties to study at home in the evenings, special courses for weaker students during vacation, motivation program for parents, unity camps for children and youths etc. The society runs four centres for facilitating residential training programs.

The society meets its financial needs through the voluntary contributions of friends in India and abroad who subscribe to the ideals for which the society stands and functions. Thanks to the voluntary service of many friends the administration costs of the society is reduced to the minimum. Most of our collaborators render honorary services and are happy to be involved in such a work for a better world, for the one universal family of God.

The activities of the Society are mostly centred on the four houses that the society runs.

Unity House

In the Unity House, Chittazha, we have accommodation facilities for fifty girls. The girls who reside there study in various classes from standard V to XII. There are also girls doing degree courses or professional courses who reside in this house. The house offers a healthy, family atmosphere for the residents with due emphasis given to the spiritual, intellectual, cultural and social aspects of life and fosters an eco friendly attitude through their contact with and involvement in the maintenance of vegetable gardens, flower gardens, animals, birds and trees.

Unity Ashram

The Unity Ashram, Idanji, can accommodate around thirty boys studying in various classes from standard VIII to XII. They go to a government school nearby and obtain in the ashram an integrated training for their educational, spiritual and vocational development.

Snehadeepam

Sneha Deepam is a hostel for boys, aged 18 and above, who have stopped their formal studies. We offer them a three year skill development programme. They are helped to develop their personality by daily practice of yoga, meditation and different kinds of work experiences. They are trained in speaking English and Hindi. Besides, they undergo scientific training, both in theory and practice, in three trades such as electrical, plumbing and mason works. After the completion of this course, it is hoped, they will become economically self-supportive and socially minded to serve their own families and the society at large.

Sneha Bhavan

Sneha Bhavan, Ponneduthakuzhy, has residential facilities for around 25 boys studying from standard I to VII. All these children are non-orphans but many of them come from families where the parents are separated or where the parents are in capable of offering their children a good upbringing.

Evening Schools

Evening Schools are small study centres run by the society in different villages where the poor children have no good atmosphere to sit and study at home in the evenings. In our evening schools such children come and study for 2-3 hours every day under the guidance of a teacher appointed by us.

Unity Gathering

Unity camps are occasions for children from different villages to come together in one place and to live like a family with other children. During these camps the children get classes on different aspects of personality development, on social life and also obtain assistance for their spiritual growth. The camps facilitate a very happy atmosphere for the children with many games, singing, dancing and other cultural and spiritual activities.

Cultural Activity

The society fosters the cultural development of its beneficiaries through training the children and youths in different cultural skills such as dancing, singing, drawing, histrionics etc
